How MacuRest Works

How MacuRest Works

MacuRest is built around a simple insight: your eyes need protection during the day and support for repair overnight. Most AREDS2 supplements address only the first part. MacuRest addresses both.

Phase 1: Daytime Protection — The AREDS2 Formula

Every day, your macula is exposed to light-induced oxidative stress. Blue light and UV radiation generate free radicals that damage the retinal pigment epithelium and the photoreceptors it supports. Over years and decades, this accumulated damage is a primary driver of age-related macular degeneration.

MacuRest delivers the key AREDS2-inspired nutrients to counter this damage:

  • Lutein (10mg) — concentrates in the macular pigment to filter blue light before it reaches photoreceptors. Think of it as internal sunscreen for your retina.
  • Zeaxanthin (2mg) — pairs with lutein in the very center of the macula, where vision is sharpest.
  • Vitamin C (500mg) — a water-soluble antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals in retinal tissue.
  • Vitamin E (400 IU) — a fat-soluble antioxidant that protects the phospholipid membranes of retinal cells from oxidative damage.
  • Zinc (25mg) — supports vitamin A metabolism in the retinal pigment epithelium. MacuRest uses 25mg, selected by Dr. Michaelos for daily tolerability. The AREDS2 clinical trial used 80mg, which causes gastrointestinal side effects in many patients — the most common reason people stop taking their supplement. Learn more about the zinc dose decision.
  • Copper (2mg) — balances zinc intake to prevent copper deficiency.

Phase 2: Overnight Repair Support

While you sleep, your retinal pigment epithelium performs intensive maintenance on your photoreceptors. Outer segments of rods and cones — worn down by a full day of capturing light — are systematically broken down and replaced in a process called phagocytosis. This overnight cycle is essential: when it degrades, as it does progressively in AMD, photoreceptor function declines.

MacuRest supports this overnight phase with:

  • Melatonin (5mg) — produced naturally by both the pineal gland and the retina itself. Retinal melatonin peaks at night and plays a direct role in triggering the disc shedding that initiates the overnight repair cycle. Research shows AMD patients tend to have lower melatonin levels than age-matched controls. See the clinical research on melatonin and eye health.
  • B-complex vitamins — support cellular energy metabolism in the highly energy-demanding retinal cells, and contribute to optic nerve health and cellular repair efficiency.

Why Evening Timing Matters

Taking MacuRest in the evening with dinner is intentional, not arbitrary:

  • Lutein and zeaxanthin are fat-soluble — they absorb significantly better when taken with a meal containing dietary fat.
  • Melatonin works with your body's natural circadian rhythm when taken at night — not against it.
  • The nutrients circulate at peak levels during the overnight repair window when they're most physiologically relevant.

One Supplement. Every Evening. Consistently.

The AREDS2 clinical trial ran for five years. The protective benefit of the formula is cumulative — it builds over months of consistent daily use. MacuRest is designed to make that consistency as simple as possible: one serving each evening with dinner, before bed.
